Dilemma
When I left the grocery store this afternoon, it was raining & baby was cranky. I threw the stuff in the car and beat it. On the way home I pulled out the receipt to check how much I saved in coupons, as I am wont to do (it was $17 by the way, and yes I am crazy).
I realized that they didn't charge me for the six 12-packs of Diet Coke I had on the bottom of my cart. The check-out lady was one of those non-stop talkers & was obviously distracted throughout the transaction. She was telling me all about how her aunt used to baby-sit, but then she got sick of it, then she.... etc.
I could have turned back, parked, gone out in the rain with the crying baby, put the soda in the cart, brought it back & paid for it. (Notice how I've documented all the steps here to show how difficult it would have been for me to do this). I don't feel right about not taking it back. I figured the next time I was in there I would tell them at the service desk & then I could pay for it there. Should I bother? Will they think I am crazy?
Just curious as to how many people would go back & pay. Or does this make up for all the times I've bought stuff & they haven't put it in my bag. Whaddya think?

I'm like you, L -- feel guilty, would probably go back and pay. BUT under the circumstances you describe, I don't think I would have gone back THEN and I would felt justified not doing so.
Then I would probably THINK about going back at another time, maybe stick the receipt up somewhere to remind me, but perhaps never get around to doing so, eventually crumpling up the receipt when cleaning and be like "Screw it."
I think you have a special case here Ms Kconflict. Normally the right thing would be to do what your instinct tells you here.
But since the product was Diet Coke - the name for the profit margin curve of that product is the Devin curve.
Their company will be fine so long as your husband stays busy
I have read and seen many news reports on excessive overcharging at the grocery store. In one study, a woman was overcharged almost $500 over the sourse of a year based on the price the item was marked in the aisle and how it was actually wrung up. I wouldn't worry about it. If you shop at Jewel or Doninck's you probably already paid for them.
I'd throw the book at you and take you away from little E. In fact, I'm calling DCFS right now.
Just kidding, L!!!
Come on, let your conscience take a breather. Try to remember to hit Customer Service the next time you hit the store and if you don't remember just remind yourself that you never intented to take the pop without paying for it. You're good peeps. *grin*
It's not like you hid the pop in E's diaper.
Did you?

I dunno. I think that if you had noticed it while in the store, it might not have been much of a hassle to go back and pay, but once you're gone, forget it. Maybe the other commenters have never gotten home from the store and realized that they left a year's supply of toilet paper (that was paid for) on the bottom of the cart. I tend to think that the grocery store karma will come around if it hasn't already, but maybe I'm just bitter about that toilet paper...
Yeah, I've gotten home & realized that something was missing, then checked the receipt & found that I did pay for it. Sometimes they don't put it in your cart. I've also gotten home and found a bag full of stuff I didn't buy (perhaps the person in front of me in line's?). I don't know. Maybe it is grocery store karma.
